Try These Different Modes of Communication for Memory Care

Using different modes of communication is a critical aspect of providing effective care for seniors with Alzheimer's or Dementia. By tailoring communication to each resident's individual needs and abilities, caregivers can help to reduce frustration, anxiety, and isolation, while fostering a sense of connection and community. Memory care communities, like MorningStar Memory Care in Beaverton, offer specialized care for seniors with Alzheimer's or Dementia. In addition to providing personalized care and support, MorningStar also emphasizes the importance of using different modes of communication to enhance the quality of life for seniors in memory care.

One of the primary reasons why using different modes of communication is important for seniors with Alzheimer's or Dementia is because these conditions can impact a person's ability to communicate effectively through speech alone. Seniors with Alzheimer's or Dementia may have trouble remembering words, may struggle to express themselves, or may experience confusion or disorientation. This can make it difficult for them to communicate their needs or feelings, which can lead to frustration, anxiety, or isolation.

Visual aids, gestures, and touch help to support seniors in memory care by making communication more seamless. For example, using picture books or other visual aids can help seniors to identify and express their needs, even if they are struggling to remember specific words. Using touch, such as holding a resident's hand or giving them a gentle hug, can also help to convey warmth and support, even if verbal communication is limited.

Another important benefit of using different modes of communication is that it can help to reduce feelings of isolation or loneliness among seniors in memory care. Memory care communities can be disorienting or overwhelming for seniors with Alzheimer's or Dementia, which can make them feel disconnected from the world around them. By using different modes of communication, caregivers can help to create a sense of connection and community, even if verbal communication is challenging.

Families can rest assured knowing their loved ones are receiving the very best modern and holistic memory care practices for memory care in Beaverton. MorningStar utilizes the latest technology and research in memory care to create an engaging and stimulating environment and lifestyle for residents. Offering a range of activities and programs, our assisted living is designed to promote social engagement, cognitive stimulation, and physical exercise. These activities not only enhance residents' quality of life, but they can also help slow the progression of dementia.

Open Your Mind to New Hobbies and Activities

How long has it been since you really made the effort to learn something new? As we age, many of us can get stuck in a rut. However, opening our minds to new ideas and trying new activities can provide seniors with a renewed interest in life and help keep the brain sharp.

The choice of hobbies and activities for retirees is endless and includes dusting off old skills or learning something entirely new. Things like painting and drawing classes can be done in person or online. The same goes for listening to lectures, joining a book club or writing workshop, and learning a foreign language. If you need more computer skills or would like to know more about social media, join a class and get started.

If you have always wanted to play an instrument, what are you waiting for? Neuroscientists and music teachers say it is never too late to learn. Scot Hawkins, a piano teacher in Silver Spring, Md., says, “Ability is low on the list of what's required for adult students. Instead, attitude — especially patience — is everything.” Playing music is a great mental exercise and can help keep brain cells alive that would otherwise wither and die.

Chess, trivia, crossword and jigsaw puzzles as well as strategy board games help sharpen our cognitive skills as do various computer and video games. Other suggestions of engaging activities include trips to local museums, concerts, and plays.

Have you begun the search for senior living? If so, we encourage you to consider MorningStar at Golden Ridge, conveniently located in a northwest suburb of Phoenix.  Our calendar is loaded with a wide range of activities and wellness programs including exercise classes, games, live entertainment and special events to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle. Research Shows Pets are Beneficial to Seniors

Research has shown pets are beneficial to seniors. A Place for Mom’s website reports on one study, which found “15 minutes spent bonding with an animal sets off a chemical chain reaction in the brain, lowering levels of the fight-or-flight hormone cortisol and increasing production of the feel-good hormone serotonin. The result: heart rate, blood pressure and stress levels immediately drop.” Researchers explain interactions between human and pets can lower cholesterol levels, fight depression and may even help protect against heart disease and stroke.

Pets can teach seniors to live in the here and now as they do, and dogs and cats are great at offering their owners unconditional love, emotional support and affection. In fact, animals uplift the spirits of those in hospitals, convalescent homes, mental health centers, nursing homes, and assisted living communities through pet therapy programs. Moreover, pet therapy has proven beneficial for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Experts point to the animal’s full acceptance and non-verbal communication as being soothing for patients.

It was not that long ago that seniors moving into a 55+ community had to leave behind an important companion, their pet. Today however, more and more senior living communities are recognizing the benefits of pets to the elderly, and many such as MorningStar at Golden Ridge, allow residents to bring their pets with them. We do ask that you check with us regarding our pet policy.

Please contact us with your questions regarding availability, choice of casitas or suites, pricing, care services and more. Our beautiful community offers 38 two-bedroom casitas for independent living and 65 suites for assisted living in a range of configurations to accommodate residents’ preferences and needs.   In addition, 35 secure memory care suites are devoted to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. We look forward to hearing from you.

Most Memory Lapses are a Result of Not Being Mindful

If you are a senior who is always looking for your phone, readers or car keys, most likely it is a normal part of aging. Lydia Cho, a psychologist and neuropsychologist with Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital, says growing older brings with it these and other memory lapses like forgetting names of people we just met or the time of our next appointment. Moreover, younger people can also be forgetful; but experts caution serious memory loss needs to be checked out by a doctor.

Thankfully most memory lapses are more a matter of not focusing or being mindful of what we are doing. For example, many times we absentmindedly set down our keys or phone while we are distracted doing other things. To keep track of commonly misplaced items, experts say set up a basket on the counter just for those things. If you are someone who always worries if you turn off the oven, you probably did it without thinking. Next time as you turn off the oven, mindfully say to yourself “I am turning off the oven.”

If you worry about forgetting where you put something, take a picture of it sitting in the drawer or the shelf in the closet. Adapting these suggestions to other things should help improve your mindfulness. Another tip when meeting someone new is to take a moment to really look at the person and say their name back to them in your greeting. If you need more help to remember their name associate it with a friend or movie character, or a rhyming word.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge is designed to be a true home for our residents and offers all the amenities and services needed for their comfort, wellbeing and safety. MorningStar at Golden Ridge Offers Assisted Living

As a vibrant 55+ community, MorningStar at Golden Ridge has stylish casitas and suites offering seniors a choice of independent living, assisted living or memory care. MorningStar’s assisted living is for seniors who require help with the activities of daily living (ADLs) to improve their quality of life. As an assisted living resident, you will have a personalized plan created for you, and updated as needed. Around-the-clock care managers, access to licensed nurses and medication management are just a few of the many services we provide to ensure your safety and to meet your needs.

Many residents report being surprised by how full their lives are after a move into an assisted living community. Moreover, rather than lose their independence as many fear such a move would do, most are pleased to discover once they get the daily care they need, they are more ready than ever to lead productive lives.

Community life solves the problem of loneliness as well as problems with meal preparation many elderly adults experience, often resorting to frozen meals or fast food. MorningStar residents enjoy beautifully prepared meals, served restaurant-style and eaten in a relaxed, community setting. No longer driving? No worries as we offer scheduled transportation to area shopping as well as trips to the doctors and running errands.

We also know it is important for seniors to continue to learn and contribute, which is why we offer a wide range of meaningful wellness programs, activities and entertainment. Moreover, if we do not have a program or activities that attract your interest or offer a hobby you would love to explore, we encourage you to start a club.

Hearing Loss is Common Among Seniors

The National Institute of Health reports approximately one in three people between the ages of 65 and 74 has hearing loss and nearly half of those older than 75 have difficulty hearing. Hearing loss causes someone a range of problems including difficulty understanding and following a doctor’s advice, responding to safety warnings, and hearing doorbells, phone calls, and alarms. Another all-too common problem is it can be hard to follow conversations with family and friends, and many start avoiding situations where they may be frustrated or embarrassed.

Medical experts advise asking your primary care physician for a referral to an otolaryngologist, an audiologist or a hearing aid specialist. An otolaryngologist is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the ear, nose, and throat. They will try to determine the cause of your hearing loss and treatment options. They may refer you to an audiologist who is trained in measuring the degree of loss as well as recommend treatment, which may include fitting you for a hearing aid. There are three different types of hearing aids and it may take some trial and error to find one that works for you (most can be purchased for a trial period).

In some cases, doctors may recommend Cochlear implants, small electronic devices surgically implanted in the inner ear that help provide a sense of sound to people who are profoundly deaf or hard-of-hearing.  Other treatment options include hearing assistive devices for your phones to amplify sound; closed circuit systems for churches or theaters; and lip or speech reading classes.

For trusted independent living, assisted living, or memory care, we encourage you to consider MorningStar Senior Living at Golden Ridge.   We are conveniently located in Peoria, minutes from Glendale, and have easy access to medical facilities, shopping, restaurants, and other services.
