Quality Assisted Living Offered at MorningStar of Glendale

At MorningStar of Glendale, we understand that families are often confused by the term “assisted living” and just what type of services it includes.  If you take a look at our website, you will get a good idea of what we can provide for you or your loved one.

To start with, our senior living community offers 71 assisted living suites that range in a variety of configurations and floor plans from spacious studios to one- and two-bedroom units.  Each suite has wall-to-wall carpeting, mini blinds, high ceiling and overhead lighting.  And yes, MorningStar of Glendale is pet friendly.

In terms of services provided for our assisted living residents, we do just about whatever it takes to ensure the comfort and safety of each individual.  Before you move in, our Wellness Director will sit down and talk with you and your family to learn more about your medical history and discuss the types of services you will require.  From there, we create a care plan with your approval, which is periodically reviewed and updated if needed.

MorningStar offers five levels of care (each with an attending monthly fee) and you will be placed within one of those levels.  However regardless of the level of care, you will have around-the-clock Care Managers on site to meet your every need.

Some of the services available to you include a licensed nurse on call 24/7; a CPR-trained team member on every shift, certified Med Care Managers, scheduled health and wellness evaluations, diabetic management, transportation to medical appointments and pharmacy services.   We also offer palliative and hospice care when required.  Please visit our website to learn more about MorningStar of Glendale and to read the entire list of Wellness Services available.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Glendale, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities.  Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve.  Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you learn more about our exceptional community.

Facts About Hypertension

The older you become the more likely it is that you will be diagnosed with high blood pressure (HBP).  Hypertension is a blood pressure reading of over 140 (upper number or systolic pressure), and higher than 90 (lower number or diastolic pressure).  Systolic pressure is the number measured when your heart beats and diastolic is the number when your heart is at rest between beats.   You can have HBP for years and not experience any symptom which is why it is known as the silent killer.  HBP is the blood pushing against artery walls more forcefully (higher pressure) which is how damage is caused over a period of time.   People with HPB are at an added risk for heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, and other serious complications.

Blood pressure should be checked on several different occasions over a period of a couple of weeks.  Blood pressure can be checked at home with a home blood pressure measurement device or monitor. It is important that you know how to use the monitor correctly and that the cuff fits you properly. For example, a cuff that is too small may give you a reading that is higher than it actually is.

Once it is established that you have suffer from hypertension, there are a number of things you can do to improve the situation.  It is recommended that you:

·         Limit your intake of sodium (some studies suggest no more than a teaspoon a day)

·         Exercise at least 30 minutes a day

·         Control your weight, and if you have a high BMI, try and reduce your weight

·         Follow the DASH diet, which stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension which is a low-fat diet that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, and grains

There are several different categories of drugs that are used to treat hypertension.  Sometimes a doctor may prescribe a combination of drugs.  Even with taking the medications, it is important to follow a healthy lifestyle.

This post is intended for informational purposes only.  Please contact your health care provider with any questions or concerns you have regarding your health.

The unique mission statement of The Cottages at Dayton Place, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities.  Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve. Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to schedule a visit to see for yourself the finest independent and assisted living Denver CO has to offer.

Keeping Your Brain Active as You Age

As we grow older, we now know it is as important to keep our brains active as it is to stay physically active.  Studies show that we not only lose muscle mass as we age but our brains actually begin to shrink.  An article from Everyday Health Media’s website explains that, “your brain's cognitive reserve — its ability to withstand neurological damage due to aging and other factors without showing visible signs of slowing or memory loss — diminishes through the years.”

Brain exercises such as word games and jigsaw puzzles as well as playing an instrument or learning a foreign language can all help to increase our brain’s cognitive reserves.  Hand-eye activities that require fine-motor skills such as knitting, drawing and painting are also helpful.  Learning to cook a new cuisine is a tasty way to keep our brains healthy since cooking involves different parts of our brains including taste, smell, sight and touch.

Another tip from the website is to get in the habit of sharpening your recall skills.  This can be as simple as writing down a list of things you need to buy from the store, memorize it, and then an hour later try to remember as many things as you can from it.  They also recommend you try to do math problems in your head, and for a further challenge do it while walking.

At MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care of Beaverton, we provide an environment that encourages both physical and mental activities.  Opening soon, our monthly calendar will be loaded with a wide range of wellness programs and entertaining activities that are both fun and stimulating.  In fact, if we do not already offer an activity a resident would like, we help them to start one.  Please visit our website to learn more about our exceptional senior living community.

New Medicare Cards are Currently Mailing to Arizona

Medicare is issuing new cards redesigned to prevent fraud to all Medicare recipients.  The new cards started mailing in April 2018, and to meet the statutory deadline, all cards will be replaced by April, 2019.  The schedule for delivery is based on your geographic location.  The cards for the state of Arizona are currently mailing now. Medicare explains that the new cards will not contain Social Security numbers as a way to help protect against identity theft.  The new red, white and blue insurance cards will instead have a unique 11 digit number on them.

This is a good idea but we want you to be aware that Medicare has issued a warning to seniors to be on the lookout for fraudsters trying to exploit them.  One way they are doing this is by posing as Medicare representatives and calling recipients asking for the 11 digit number from their card.  Please Note that Medicare states they do not and will not call recipients.  They strongly advise against giving out your new number over the phone to anyone and remind recipients that Medicare only operates via the US Mail.

Furthermore, Medicare asks that you help to get the word out by warning family and friends that they may be at risk for these scams.  Reiterate not to give out any information over the phone to anyone claiming to be a representative of Medicare.

Your new card will automatically come to you and you do not need to do anything as long as your address is up to date. If you need to update your address, go online or give them a call.  Also keep in mind that your card may arrive at a different time than your friend’s or neighbor’s as mailing takes time.  Your Medicare coverage and benefits will stay the same.

Keeping Seniors Safe on the Road

Older drivers can still be good, safe drivers, but there are some things to consider both for your safety and the safety of others.  The Mayo Clinic recommends that seniors stay as active as possible in their day-to-day life which helps to maintain overall strength, flexibility, and range of motion.  Drivers need to be able to turn and look over their shoulder and move their head with ease.  They must be able to keep a firm grip on the steering wheel and legs need to be strong enough to apply pressure to the gas pedal or brake.

A senior’s peripheral vision can decrease with age or from certain medications and other eye problems may cause drivers to have trouble seeing in the dark or experience blurred vision.  Hearing problems can interfere with detecting sounds of sirens from emergency vehicles or approaching cars.  Be vigilant about scheduling vision and hearing tests regularly as part of your wellness care and follow your doctor’s advice as to how often they should be done.  Many problems can be corrected if caught early enough.

Remember that certain medications can cause drowsiness so make sure you know the side effects of your prescription drugs and do not drive if you are feeling sleepy.  It may be a good idea to limit trips in the car to daylight hours and when the weather is good.  Keep in mind that a person’s reaction time slows with age as do their motor skills.  You may need to re-evaluate your driving every so few months, especially if you find yourself having incidences of accidents that almost happen.

The MedicineNet website has some safe driving tips for seniors:

Planning before you leave:
·         Plan to drive on streets you know.
·         Limit your trips to places that are easy to get to and close to home.
·         Take routes that let you avoid risky spots like ramps and left turns.
·         Add extra time for travel if driving conditions are bad.
·         Don't drive when you are stressed or tired.
While you are driving:
·         Always wear your seat belt.
·         Stay off the cell phone.
·         Avoid distractions such as listening to the radio or having conversations.
·         Leave a big space, at least two car lengths, between your car and the one in front of you. If you are driving at higher speeds or if the weather is bad, leave even more space between you and the next car.
·         Make sure there is enough space behind you. (Hint: if someone follows you too closely, slow down so that the person will pass you.)
·         Use your rear window defroster to keep the back window clear at all times.
·         Keep your headlights on at all times.

Many Older Adults Prefer Senior Living

Many older adults are attracted to the idea of carefree retirement years and have found that senior living communities offer the opportunity for a very comfortable lifestyle.   Much of that is due to the fact that senior living communities like MorningStar of Glendale are designed to meet seniors’ social, physical, spiritual and wellness needs.  Senior living communities include independent living and assisted living as well as memory care that specialize in caring for those with Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases.

The physical upkeep involved in owning a home such as mowing lawns, shoveling snow, and other routine chores become harder as we age.  At a senior living community, someone else does the outdoor and indoor maintenance, and communities like MorningStar of Glendale offer housekeeping, laundry and other services.  In other words, senior living residents have the freedom to focus on more fulfilling activities like relaxing and enjoying themselves.

Senior living is also a perfect solution for older adults who live alone and are feeling lonely.  Their world may have gotten smaller as they retired from careers or suffered the loss of a spouse or close friends.  Some seniors no longer feel comfortable driving, which can lead to more isolation.  Senior living offers you privacy but now you have the comfort of knowing that people are around when you need them.  Also you will have the chance to socialize and meet new friends.  At MorningStar of Glendale, we provide scheduled transportation along with outings to places such as entertainment venues, museums, shopping malls, outdoor parks and more.

If senior living sounds like something you would like to know more about, please visit our website.  If you like what you see, please contact us to learn more about our exceptional community.

Downsizing Before Your Move to a Senior Living Community

If you are ready to move from your family home into independent or assisted living, we have some helpful suggestions to help you organize and downsize your life’s possessions. Organizing experts caution that while the task may seem overwhelming, you need to create a plan, take it one step at a time, and give yourself plenty of time. If you are unable to do the work due to your health, there are professionals you can hire that specialize in helping seniors move.

It is recommended you start in one room and work from there. Recruit as much help as you can from family and friends and set up piles of items you will keep, stuff to donate or sell at a yard sale, and things you want to gift to people.

Always keep in mind that your new space is most likely going to be smaller so get rid of duplicates and consider how your new lifestyle will be different from how you are now living. For instance, if you are moving into a community that offers meals, chances are you will need only the barest amount of kitchen items.

The same goes for furniture. It is suggested you make a floor plan of your new place so you have an idea of the scale of what will fit. Consider selling furniture such as a coffee table or couch that seems too big and use the money toward purchasing pieces that are more suited to the size of the place. Not only will your place be more comfortable and look better, but it is important to have open pathways throughout your suite to help prevent the risk of a fall.

At MorningStar of Arvada, we offer a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community. For independent and assisted living we have 112 spacious suites in studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans. In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood has 29 secure suites for those with memory impairment.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Arvada, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities. Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve. Veterans in Assisted Living May be Eligible for Financial Benefits

MorningStar of Glendale is pleased to provide families with ideas for additional financial solutions beyond traditional retirement savings and investment income to help pay for assisted living.  On our website, you will find extensive information on several under-utilized financial benefits and resources including a full explanation of the generous “Aid & Attendance” pension from the US Department of Veteran Affairs.

Aid & Attendance is a monthly benefit payment available to certain wartime veterans and their survivors who qualify for financial need and have a doctor’s order for regular assistance with daily living activities.  To be eligible, the vet must have served for at least 90 days of active duty with at least one of those days spent serving during a period of a foreign war.  Furthermore the vet cannot have been dishonorably discharged.  The benefit does not require the vet to have served overseas, seen combat or retired from the military.  Surviving spouses of the vet are also eligible for the Aid & Attendance pension if they were married to the vet at the time of their death and have not remarried.

When we find out that a vet or the family of a vet is interested in our community, we are pleased to direct them to local resources that can help to ease and quicken the application process for “Aid & Attendance.  In every state including Arizona, there is a Department of Military/Veteran Affairs staffed with Veteran Service Officers (VSOs) who will help you complete the 41-page Aid & Attendance application free of charge.  The approval process typically takes 3 to 4 months.

Throughout our many MorningStar’s communities, we are privileged to have veterans from all five branches of military service call us home.  Please visit our website and take a look at our Family Resources information regarding ways to finance assisted living including “Aid & Attendance” pension benefits for Veterans.

MorningStar’s Signature Wellness Program

All of our MorningStar communities, including MorningStar of Beaverton, provide our residents with our signature wellness program, WellStar.  Offering an array of creative and enriching ways to stay active and productive, our programs integrate different modalities and senses for both the body and the mind.  WellStar has five wellness components – physical, spiritual, intellectual, social, and food philosophy.

One thing that sets MorningStar apart from other senior living communities is that our entire team works together to build a true community and our WellStar programs exemplify that philosophy.  Each day, our Wellness and Life Enrichment team offers purposeful activities that are aimed to elevate the mood of our residents, reduce pain and to help them rely less on medications.

Our daily assortment of physical wellness activities are designed to meet a range of capabilities as well as a variety of interests.  We also recognize meeting the spiritual needs of our seniors is vital to their wellbeing, and as such, our chapel is open to all faiths.  MorningStar also offers non-denominational services on a regular basis along with bible study, hymn singing and group prayer.

In terms of intellectual wellness, we understand that it is important for seniors to continue to stimulate their brains, and we offer a daily dose of brain calisthenics designed to introduce new ideas and practice cognitive skills.  Furthermore, we do not neglect the importance of social wellness.  Almost everything we do at MorningStar communities advances our goal of building a family for life.  Socializing comes in the form of organized events and activities or just informal gatherings discussing the day’s topics.

We also do not forget the philosophy that healthy, nutritious food is the centerpiece of wellness and it becomes even more critical as we age.  Our daily meals include the addition of foods that new research finds has tremendous healing power such as: berries, chocolate high in cocoa mass, Omega 3 fats, turmeric, and dark leafy greens.  Visit our website or give us a call to learn more.

Study on Aging Shows Some Surprising Results

The longest, most comprehensive study ever done on aging by the Harvard Study of Adult Development has turned up some unexpected results.  The study, which began in the 1930s, examined more than 800 men and women from adolescence into old age.  The purpose of the research is to find clues to the participants’ behaviors that translate into happy and healthy longevity.

George Vaillant, MD, director of the Harvard study and senior physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, states that, "I had expected that the longevity of your parents, the quality of your childhood, and your cholesterol levels would be very influential.  So I was very surprised that these particular variables weren't more important than they were."

Another commonly held belief regarding aging well has typically included avoiding stress.  However, the results from the study indicate that stressful events did not predict future health and that some people who have had a lot of stress have aged quite well despite it.  The important thing seems to be how well you deal with the stress.

The Harvard study also found that genetics may not play as big of a role in how well we age as do things such as not smoking or overeating, maintaining a healthy body weight, and developing good coping skills.  Exercising, keeping good social connections, and being a life-long learner are additionally all precursors to a healthy longevity.  In fact, the overriding conclusion of the study appears to be that we have more control over our longevity that we may have thought in the past.

MorningStar takes the residents’ wellbeing at our communities very seriously.  Our signature wellness program, WellStar, is designed to enhance health and wellness, stimulate the brain and encourage social connections.  Please visit our website to learn more about our new community in Glendale, AZ.

Preparing for Your Doctor Appointment

Who of us has not left the doctor’s office and thought about all of the questions we meant to ask?  It is an easy thing to do and this is why it helps to take some time to prepare before your next appointment.  Here are some simple steps you can do to ensure this does not happen again.

First, you should stop and think about all of the concerns and questions you may have before you leave home.  Think back to your last doctor visit and make a note if anything has changed in your health since then.  Include any symptoms you are experiencing such as aches, pains, lack of sleep, weight loss or gain, and any mood changes.  Be specific with your symptoms as to how often they occur and the severity.  Write down everything you can think of that is relevant to these concerns.

Now go over all the medications you are currently taking and write down the names and the dosage.  Some doctors will even ask that you bring all of your medications in their containers so they can go over them.  You should include any over-the-counter drugs or herbal remedies along with vitamins and eye drops.  Be sure to list any allergies to drugs that you may have.

Add to your list any other questions that have not been addressed up to this point.  Mention any life changes you may have had since your last visit and be ready to answer questions about your diet, are you still driving, physical exercise, social activities, etc.

Remember this is your health and take ownership.  You and your doctor are a team working together to make sure you get the best medical care.  Do not hesitate to ask for the reassurance and guidance you need to make the best decisions regarding your medical treatment.
