When Should a Senior Give Up Driving?
Are you aware that some states have different rules for older drivers? For instance, in Arizona, drivers 65 and older must renew their license every five years in person at an MVD office, requiring a new photo and a vision test. This differs from younger drivers who renew less frequently (often 12 years) and can sometimes renew online or by mail.
If you are wondering if your parents should still be driving, experts say age is not an absolute but varies from individual to individual, and guidelines include commonsense and wellness factors. Obviously, things like Alzheimer’s and other memory impairments affect judgement and driving ability so consult with their physician to see if the keys need to be taken away. They add seniors limited by the complications of diabetes should also be assessed by their physician for their ability to drive.
Another reason a senior should not be driving is due to their medications. Certain commonly prescribed drugs are known to cause drowsiness and/or slow down a person’s reaction time. If you have concerns, again check with their doctor or use the CDC’s medicine risk fact sheet. Other problems like dizziness and shortness of breath also interfere with safe driving.
Mom or dad’s physical condition may mean they should be a passenger and not a driver. A Place for Mom, explains, “Driving takes control and dexterity. Inactivity can cause muscle deterioration, which can affect a person’s agility, coordination and strength.” This can also include a loss in hearing and vision.
Warning signs an elderly adult should not be driving are accidents or having close calls. Even getting ticketed for unsafe driving maneuvers as well as getting lost on familiar routes means mom or dad should become a passenger.

Over-the-Counter Medications Can Be Risky for Older Adults
All too often people think of over-the-counter drugs (OTC) as being safe and not having the side-effects or drug interactions their prescription drugs might have. Experts say this attitude could put you at risk as many OTC drugs are not as harmless as we think, especially for older adults. AARP cited a statistic showing as many as 178,000 hospitalizations a year are caused by a reaction to OCT medications and adults 65 years and older were more commonly harmed.
One reason older adults are more vulnerable to adverse outcomes are many already take several prescription drugs. A report from the Lown Institute, a non-profit organization, reported nearly half of adults 65 years and older take five (known as polypharmacy) or more prescription drugs daily. Another close to 20 percent takes 10 or more daily.
This increases the risk of interactions when taking OTC medication for pain relief, stomach issues, allergies or other needs. In addition, the AARP article explains as we age, our bodies lose muscle and gain fat, which slows down the process of getting rid of medications. One of the organs responsible for processing medication is the kidneys, which start to work less effectively to filter and eliminate waste causing medications to build up. Aging livers also work less effectively to break down medications.
Common OTCs like acetaminophen (generic name for Tylenol) can cause damage to the liver. Ann M. Hester, M.D., a board-certified internal medicine physician based in Highland, Maryland explains overuse of acetaminophens is the leading cause of deadly liver failure. Seniors on blood thinners should be aware that ibuprofen (Motrin and Advil) and naproxen (Aleve) OTCs drugs may result in stomach bleeding and ulcers. Moreover, doctors no longer recommend people take a daily aspirin as a preventive measure toward heart disease as it too may cause stomach bleeding.
People with high blood pressure should be aware that decongestants containing phenylephrine or pseudoephedrine like Sudafed can increase blood pressure. It can also cause problems to combine an OTC pain reliever with a decongestant as it too raises blood pressure putting the person at risk for a stroke; and men with prostate issues are at risk for urinary problems. There are other OTCs that seniors should be wary of so before you take one, be sure to check with your healthcare provider.

Delicious Foods That Are Also Good for You
When dieting, it is best to shy away from fried foods, foods loaded with empty carbs and sugary foods. Dieticians say that still leaves a lot of tasty food we can eat without feeling guilty. At the top of the list are non-starchy vegetables of which there are many ways to prepare them to ensure they are both satisfying and tasty.
If vegetables aren’t your favorite food, it may be you are not creative enough in preparing them. A simple suggestion is to give your veggies a quick spray of olive oil, add seasoning and a few cloves of garlic. Either roast or air fry to give them a punch of flavor. If you love dips, think about switching up from heavy-caloric dips to ones using salsa or low-fat yogurt.
A list of veggies nutrient-dense and light in calories includes broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, carrots, sprouts and kale. If you want fruits, the best to eat are watermelon and cantaloupe, most berries and kiwi. Beata Rydyger, a registered nutritionist based in Los Angeles, says “Along with these foods being beneficial for weight maintenance and weight loss, they are very high in macronutrients such as carbohydrates and micronutrients including vitamins and minerals.” Moreover, these foods are rich in fiber, and fiber keeps blood sugar levels stable and keeps you feeling fuller longer.
Other foods that fill you up are nuts and seeds. While they are higher in calories than fruits and veggies, a handful contains protein as well as vitamins and minerals. Snacking mid-afternoon on a cup of low-fat cottage cheese, hard-boiled egg or cup of tuna helps ensure you won’t overeat at dinner time. Remember to stay hydrated throughout the day. Drinking a glass of water or bone broth before a meal can help reduce the amount you eat during the meal. However, dieticians say when making any dietary changes, you should start slowly and work with your healthcare provider.

Finding Good Medical Information
The Medical News Today cites recent surveys showing Americans are vulnerable to misinformation via social and mass market media as well as from friends and family. As this can include critical medical information, they warn while there is a fount of easily accessible content, there are things we can do to protect ourselves from inaccurate advice.
According to a 2024 survey from Healthline, more than half of American respondents said they got health information via social media, while another 32% said they turned to family, friends, and colleagues for health advice. To help empower us to make good medical decisions, Medical News Today spoke with Dawn Holford, PhD from the School of Psychological Science at the University of Bristol, U.K. who specializes in the psychology of communication and decision-making.
Holford suggests people double check information with more than one reliable source to look for consensus across the board. She also adamantly says it is up to medical news websites like Medical News Today to be extra diligent to ensure their information is correct. In terms of the consumer, she recommends using trusted governmental public health organizations as well as global ones like the World Health Organization. In addition, look for well-vetted independent sites and reach out to trusted healthcare providers.
Following her rule of thumb, Holford cautions to be on your guard. She explains, “If something seems to align to what you already believe — it may well be correct, but follow the same steps to verify it.”

Nutritious Options for Snacks
Many of us experience a mid-morning or late afternoon slump in terms of energy and need a little bite of something to give us a lift. While experts say snacking can be a good thing, it is important to do it with healthy options. They emphasize the best snacks are low-sugar and nutrient-rich; and provide energy as well as support overall health. Snacks rich in fiber and protein help keep us feeling full. Foods to avoid are ultra-processed and high in calories, fat, sodium and added sugar.
Some examples of healthy snacks are smoothies. They can be made with fresh greens, your choice of milk and fruit. Along the same line is a cup of low-fat yogurt topped with fresh or frozen, thawed berries. If you don’t like yogurt, a cup of cottage cheese with fruit is a good alternative.
Kale is one of the healthiest leafy, green vegetables; and kale chips are a fun way to enjoy it. Moreover, they are very easy to make on your own. Prep carrots, celery and other raw veggies in advance to dip into humus or low-fat yogurt dip. Other quick and easy snacks include steamed edamame, unsalted pepitas, nuts and fresh fruits.
The popular superfood, chia seeds, are loaded with protein and fiber, and support heart and brain health. One tasty way to eat them is as a chia pudding, which is another very simple thing to make. Other quick snack ideas include peanut butter and apple slices or guacamole spread on whole wheat toast.
Whatever snack you decide on, make it something you enjoy. Registered dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic Department of Wellness & Preventive Medicine, Kristin Kirkpatrick, M.S., R.D., L.D., says regardless of how good it is for you, if you don’t like it, you probably won’t eat it. She explains that “studies show that when you take this important factor into your dietary pattern, you are more likely to stick with it. For example, if you don’t like kale, don’t include it—instead, find another green or cruciferous veggie that you love.”
At MorningStar Senior Living at Golden Ridge, we proudly serve meals prepared under the guidance of our Executive Chef, who knows how to make every meal a special occasion. Dizziness & Older Adults
Doctors say dizziness is a common complaint of older adults. Symptoms may include vertigo (feels like the room is spinning); light-headedness; faintness and weakness; and nausea. While confusing and uncomfortable to sufferers, experts say it’s rarely a sign of anything serious or life-threatening, and is generally treatable. However, if you experience acute, prolonged dizziness, especially if accompanied by symptoms such as chest pains, passing out and/or severe headache; seek immediate medical attention.
Most causes of dizziness are from an inner ear disturbance, motion sickness, medications, or other conditions of poor health. To diagnose the problem, your doctor will want to know how long your dizziness lasts and other symptoms you may be having. Medications with the known side-effect of dizziness include ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers and calcium-channel blockers.
The Mayo Clinic explains that with inner ear disorders your brain receives signals from the inner ear that aren't consistent with what your eyes and sensory nerves are receiving. Vertigo may result as the brain works to try and sort out the confusion. One common inner ear problem is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). The condition comes on with sudden movements of the head that cause vertigo and is treated with certain maneuvers and medications like meclizine (an antihistamine used to treat motion sickness and dizziness).
Meniere’s disease is another inner ear condition and is the result of a fluid built-up in the inner ear. Symptoms include long-term vertigo caused by things like too much salt in the diet, coffee, alcohol and stress, as well as viral infections and congestion. Treatment includes altering your diet and medications to relieve fluid build-up.
Dizziness can also be caused by migraines, neurological conditions, dehydration, low blood sugar and other conditions. It is important to remember that dizziness can increase your risk for a fall. If the condition persists, talk to your doctor who can help narrow down the cause of your dizziness and prescribe the appropriate treatment.

Exercise Improves Bone Health and Reduces Risk of Fractures
The Bone Health & Osteoporosis Foundation reports approximately 10 million people in the United States have osteoporosis, and 44 million have low bone density, meaning they are at risk of developing the condition. One in two females and up to one in four males will be affected by a broken bone in their lifetime due to osteoporosis. Medication, calcium, and vitamin D and K can help strengthen bones.
In addition, if you are diagnosed with osteoporosis or low bone mass, an important lifestyle habit is to introduce weight-bearing exercises into your daily routine. The Harvard Medical School publication explains even if you have already had a fracture, you should be staying active. They explain the risk of another fracture is very high, so you want to do everything you can to lessen the chances of that happening by increasing your bone density.
- Weight-bearing exercises can reduce the risk of a fall as well as reduce the risk of fracturing a bone if you do fall. The publication cites an analysis reported on by the British Medical Association’s BMJ, which found that programs of balance, strength, and resistance training reduced the odds of falls resulting in fractures by more than 60%.
- Harvard Medical School says the four components of an exercise program for osteoporosis should include:
- Weight-bearing exercises that force your body to work against gravity. These include walking, climbing stairs, playing tennis, and dancing. (Higher-impact activities strengthen bone more than lower-impact exercises, but only do what your fitness level allows).
- Muscle-strengthening exercises using weights or your body's own resistance to work against gravity. This includes lifting free weights, using a weight machine, working with resistance bands, and lifting your own body weight. Do it at least twice a week.
- Balance exercises can improve your ability to hold yourself upright and help prevent falls. Examples of these types of balance exercises are tai chi and yoga. Again try to do these at least twice a week.
- Flexibility exercises are useful to ensure muscles stay limber, and joints mobile. Stretching and yoga are good exercises. Experts recommend stretching after every workout for five to 10 minutes.
Please consult with your doctor before beginning any new exercise

Staying Up Late May Not Be Good for Your Health
It used to be that medical professionals felt there was no difference in quality regarding the hours a person spent sleeping until recently. Over the last few years, several studies suggest people who stay up into the wee hours of the night may not be as healthy as those who routinely go to bed earlier. This may be due to the fact they are doing the bulk of their sleeping during daylight hours.
A 2023 Harvard study followed a group of healthy middle-age women over a period of eight years. Those who identified themselves as “night owls” had a “72% increase in the risk for developing diabetes than those who identified as morning people. In addition, the study found night owls were more likely to be overweight; and have other unhealthy habits such as a poor diet, smoking or consuming too much alcohol. An earlier study from 2021 reported middle-aged and older adults who said they routinely go to sleep after 10pm showed a greater risk for obesity. Those that went to bed between 2am and 6am had an even higher risk of obesity. Another risk for night owls is not sleeping as many hours a night as their counterparts.
While there are most likely a number of reasons for the increase in the risk of diabetes and obesity beyond sleep patterns, research finds the strongest sleep-cycle hours are between midnight and dawn. Dr. Kenneth Sassower, a pediatric and adult sleep neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital stated, "If you're a night owl and you don't go to sleep until the middle of the night, you're not maximizing the number of hours you can sleep in darkness. The sun comes up soon after your bedtime, which might lead to poor-quality or interrupted sleep."
Doctors say it can be hard to switch to an early bedtime so it is best to do it slowly. Dr. Sassower recommends starting by going to bed 20 minutes earlier for five days in a row. After that continue 20 minutes earlier for another five days until you reach your desired bedtime. Tips to help you get to sleep include turning off your electronic devices at least an hour before bedtime, exercising daily (but not close to bedtime) and avoiding alcohol and spicy foods close to bedtime.
At MorningStar of Golden Ridge, we offer seniors a full range of interesting and entertaining wellness programs and activities to keep you physically, mentally, spiritually and socially stimulated.
