Information Regarding Our Fees

MorningStar at Dayton Place offer seniors the benefit of predictable budgeting, built-in companionship, and great food they no longer have to cook.  Our hospitality and care teams feel honored to serve seniors and we all work toward the goal of creating a true home filled with comfort, community and a spirit of love.  Along with a choice of smartly-designed suites, residents enjoy the serenity of mature landscaped grounds and gardens as well as warm and inviting common areas perfect to relax in and spend time with family and friends.

One of the questions we frequently get asked is how a resident’s monthly fee is determined.  For assisted living residents, monthly fees are based on the level of service we provide and the type of suite (such as size, location, and view).  Before an assisted living resident moves in, our Wellness Director sits down with them and their family to discuss their medical history and the type of care they need to ensure their comfort and safety.

Dayton Place’s 104 independent living suites are within an independent living neighborhood, and are complete with bustling common areas and popular amenities. Your monthly fee includes letting us handle all of the maintenance, both inside and out.   Your suite is also equipped with a full kitchen for the meals you feel like preparing on your own.

The Cottages at Dayton Place offer stress-free living at an incomparable value.  Our patio homes are characterized by premium upgrades and virtually all of your living expenses (including homeowners insurance and property tax) are controlled through our bundled Monthly Service Fee.

In our Reflections Neighborhood, which is devoted to the care of those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, our 17 secure studios and one-bedroom suites are all-inclusively priced (suite + care).  Please visit our website to learn more about Denver’s most popular senior living community.

MorningStar at Dayton Place offers the very best in senior living with a unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve as we work toward creating a true home for residents amidst a serene setting.  Please call or email to setup a tour of the area’s finest senior living in Denver CO.

Learn More About Senior Living Communities

For many elderly adults, the thought of moving from their home is overwhelming.  However the truth is that today there are many excellent options for seniors specifically designed to enable them to keep their independence.  One example is senior living communities that offer a range of care options including independent living, assisted living and memory care.

The goal of senior communities is to give aging adults the opportunity to maintain their independence while providing convenient access to assistance, activities and companionship.  All too often, seniors mistakenly think that moving into a community setting means they have to give up their privacy.  Again, this could not be further from the truth as communities like MorningStar Senior Living of Glendale offer a choice of spacious private suites for assisted living and memory care.  In addition, MorningStar offers 38 Casitas with attached garages for independent living.

Another issue older adults worry about when moving into senior living is that they will be leaving their families.  The fact is senior living communities offer their own sense of comfort with 24/7 security and care.  So if you need help in the middle of the night, someone is there to respond quickly.

Seniors also cite the fact that they think moving to a senior living community will mean they have to give up the things they liked doing around their home such as gardening and having a backyard to enjoy the outdoors.  The truth is that living in a community probably means you will be busier than when you lived alone.  Senior communities are designed with an array of activities such as gardening and book clubs, fitness rooms, outdoor patios and strolling paths, game rooms, theaters and much more.

To see one of the finest examples of senior living, we encourage you to take a look at MorningStar of Glendale.  Opening in late 2018, we are dedicated to creating a beautiful, vibrant campus offering a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community. Contact us or stop by our onsite information center to learn more.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Glendale, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities.  Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve.  Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to see for yourself the area’s finest independent living, assisted living and memory care.

Preventing Falls

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that one in four adults age 65 years and older falls each year.  Any time a senior falls, it can be extremely serious and is the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries for the elderly.  Statistics show that 3 million older adults are treated in an emergency department each year for nonfatal falls, and 800,000 are hospitalized.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) advises that seniors “fall proof” both the inside and outside of their homes.  Every room should have clear pathways that are free of clutter and other obstacles that could cause a fall.  All carpets should be securely attached to floors and stairways, and rather than throw rugs, use non-slip rugs or apply non-slip strips.

Another suggestion from the NIH is to have good lighting throughout your home including well-lit hallways, entrances, and stairwells.  Also have a lamp close to your bed that is easy to turn on to avoid stumbling around in the dark when getting in and out of bed.

In addition wearing the proper shoes is also an important part of preventing falls.  Shoes should fit well and have low heels, non-slip soles and completely surround your foot.  Other safety tips include installing handrails and grab bars in the bathroom.

At MorningStar of Beaverton, our beautiful community is designed to accommodate our residents’ limitations.  All of our spacious private suites will come with wall-to-wall carpeting, handicapped-accessible bathrooms and emergency call systems.  We will also provide a 24/7 care staff and a full-time licensed nurse.  In addition, residents will be offered weekly housekeeping, laundry and linen services as well as daily spot cleaning and trash removal.

MorningStar of Beaverton proudly provides the very best in senior living with our unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we create a true home for residents amid a beautiful setting. Seniors’ Good Nutrition Contributes to a Healthy Lifestyle

Even for older adults, good nutrition is important for a healthy lifestyle.  A study from the National Institute of Health (NIH) states that “a good diet in your later years reduces your risk of osteoporosis, high blood pressure, heart diseases and certain cancers. As you age, you might need less energy. But you still need just as many of the nutrients in food.“

As a part of their findings, they recommend avoiding foods loaded with empty calories such as potato chips, cookies, soda and alcohol to ensure you get your proper amount of daily nutrients.  Instead they advise eating wholesome, nutrient-rich foods that are low in cholesterol and saturated or trans fats.

One of the benefits of eating well is that it may help to reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, Type II diabetes and bone loss as well as some types of cancer.  In fact if you already suffer from one of those diseases, maintaining a healthy diet along with staying physically active can help you to better manage them.  Additionally adopting a healthy diet can help to reduce your blood pressure and lower your cholesterol.

Wholesome, healthy foods help keep muscles, bones, organs, and other body parts strong and vitamin-rich food can boost immunity and fight against illness-causing toxins.  Furthermore, a healthy diet can help you feel better as well as give you more energy.

At MorningStar Senior Living of Glendale, we wholeheartedly agree that good nutrition is important for seniors.  This is why our residents are served daily meals that are not only very healthy but also delicious.  Please contact us to learn more about the wide range of services and programs offered by MorningStar.

Glowing Reviews from Residents and their Families

MorningStar at Dayton Place is proud to have earned the trust of families living in and around the greater Denver area.  We feel privileged to serve and treat all of our residents with the dignity and respect they deserve.  This is why we are always gratified when a resident or family member takes the time to write a review of our community.

One such review included the following: “Dear wonderful staff of Dayton Place…Thank you so much for taking care of my family these past six years. Your care and kindness helped both of my parents live with grace and peace. We couldn’t have done it without you. May God bless each one of you.”

Hearing from residents is also important to us. One recounts how much she enjoys living at MorningStar at Dayton Place and the fun she has had at our special events.  She writes, “I walked into the lobby on Saturday to a fairy tale. The Casino Night event was coordinated and complete…making such a wonderful impact.”  She also enjoyed seeing other residents have fun, and ends by stating, “This is a wonderful place to call home. I thank God for the gift of being here.”

Another area family wrote, “My dad and I toured MorningStar earlier last year. We met your incredible team: sweet and encouraging. It was a Happy Hour when we visited, and Dad thought it a pretty fun party. He felt right at home.”   They add that while their dad passed away before he could move in, they feel our community and care was the best they saw, and they had extensively looked around.

We invite you to visit our website for more information about our remarkable senior living community.  Our property has 104 independent living suites and 76 assisted living suites, in a choice of spacious studios or one and two-bedroom floor plans.  For those suffering from Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, we have 17 studio and one-bedroom suites.  Also our campus includes The Cottages at Dayton Place, which are ideal for active, independent seniors and offers 41 free-standing patio homes with a clubhouse and pool.

What to Say to Someone Who is Grieving

We all feel helpless when someone we care about is going through a tough time.  It is difficult for a person to experience the loss of someone they love and as a friend or family member; it is hard to watch.  There are some things you can do to help a person with the grieving process.

It is important to let the person know that you care about them and want to help out in any way possible.  Do not let your discomfort with the situation allow you to shy away from the situation.  The best thing you can do is to be supportive.  Be prepared to listen (avoid giving advice) and allow the bereaved person to talk or just sit quietly.  Let them know you hear and acknowledge their pain without minimalizing their loss.

Here are some suggestions to use as a guide when trying to comfort someone who is experiencing a loss:

§  Acknowledge the situation. Example: "I heard that your_____ died." Use the word "died" That will show that you are more open to talk about how the person really feels.
§  Express your concern. Example: "I'm sorry to hear that this happened to you."
§  Be genuine in your communication and don't hide your feelings. Example: "I’m not sure what to say, but I want you to know I care."
§  Offer your support. Example: "Tell me what I can do for you."
§  Ask how he or she feels, and don't assume you know how the bereaved person feels on any given day.

*Source: American Cancer Society

Just keep in mind that there is no right or wrong way to grieve, nor is there a set time table.  Everyone grieves in their own way, but do keep in mind that there are some warning signs that a person is not adjusting to their new situation.  The loss of the ability to function in their day-to-day life, extreme feelings of anger or guilt, withdrawing, and abuse of alcohol or drugs may be a signal that they need professional help.

The Benefits of Walking for Exercise

Experts agree that walking is beneficial to seniors’ health as it can stop bone mass loss, strengthen leg and abdominal muscles, and improve circulation by helping to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk for heart disease.  Walking can also lead to weight loss or maintain your weight, help you sleep better, increase your mental sharpness, and improve balance and stability.  It can even increase your lifespan.  However if you have not exercised in a while, doctors recommend you start slowly and only gradually increase your distance and pace.

If you let your health care provider know you are going to start walking, they can help you determine a safe starting point.  From the onset you may only be able to walk a block, but over time, you will be able to go farther and should start noticing benefits fairly quickly.  Additionally experts say even if you need a cane or a walker to safely move about, don’t let that stop you from walking, just take it with you.  Also wear properly fitted comfortable shoes that provide good arch support.   If you have foot problems, talk to your doctor about orthopedic shoes.

Remember to not overexert yourself.  Walk at a safe pace and keep in mind that the most important thing is to just get started.  For your safety, tuck your cell phone into a pocket that you can easy get to if the need arises and stay hydrated.  To help keep you motivated, walk with a buddy or join a walking group.

At MorningStar, we wholeheartedly agree that walking is great exercise for seniors and we have a Walking Club at many of our communities.  Please visit our website to learn more about our beautiful new community opening this fall in Arvada, Colorado.

Please consult your health care provider before starting any type of exercise.

MorningStar of Beaverton’s Memory Care

MorningStar of Beaverton’s philosophy and approach to memory care includes our guiding principle that: whatever the extent of the memory loss, whatever the form of dementia, a person’s essence remains.  We feel it our calling as well as our privilege to find ways to connect with and nurture that essence.

Our individualized care starts by meeting with the senior and their family members to learn all we can about the person’s background including their vocation, talents and preferences.  Taking this information, we put together a daily routine that will be used to stimulate or calm the resident in response to their mood or the surrounding circumstances.  Throughout the senior’s stay with us, we also engage the family members as we know our services are as much for them as for the residing senior.

MorningStar’s memory care provides an atmosphere of safety and well-being, while at the same time, encourages and supports choice and independence whenever possible.  Our residents participate in daily recreational and purposeful activities that include life skills, art, music, and exercise and are included in special events and scheduled outings.

The Reflections Neighborhood is designed to permit residents the freedom to move about in spacious surroundings and include an enclosed courtyard that is reserved just for their use.  Our extensive services include around-the-clock care, daily health monitoring, a licensed nurse and a caring and devoted staff.

MorningStar is honored to partner with the Alzheimer’s Association in every market we serve.  Our team members work to support their local chapter by donating their time, talent and treasure.  In addition, MorningStar of Beaverton will participate in Alzheimer’s events including Memories in the Making, The Longest Day and Walk to End Alzheimer’s.  Please visit our website for contact information as well as to learn more about our assisted living and memory care community.

Finding the Best Assisted Living Community

Searching for an assisted living community for yourself or a parent can feel like an overwhelming task.  We know you want to make the best choice and there are a couple of things you may want to consider before you take such an important step.

First, you will want to research the various options in your preferred area.  The Internet is an efficient and easy way to discover what is out there, and you will find several websites that offer a search directory of communities.  Also you can check with your health care provider for any recommendations they may have.

Once you have narrowed down your list to several communities in your target location, give them a call to get more information.  While on the phone, have a list of questions handy such as are there immediate openings available, and if not, how long is the wait, the price range and services and amenities offered.

A community tour or a visit to the information center for a new property is your best opportunity to get a real feel for the place.  You want your future home to have a caring and warm staff and everything necessary to meet your needs.  If you are looking for assisted living for a family member that is not very mobile, you can visit a few and narrow down the selections so they only see the top choices.  The Caring.com website has a checklist available for researching and visiting a community that you may find helpful.

At MorningStar, the thing we brag the most about is our atmosphere of love and community that is built on one relationship at a time.   Opening in late 2018, MorningStar of Glendale is conveniently located in central Glendale, and will have a choice of 71 private assisted living suites with various floor plans.   In addition, the campus will include Casitas for independent living as well as suites devoted to the specialized care of residents with memory impairment.  Please call us or stop by the onsite information center for more details.

Seniors Still Need to Take Care of Their Skin

Not that we are older, most of us wish we had been more careful about limiting our time in the sun, especially during peak hours.  However that does not mean we should stop trying. Protecting our skin from further skin damage and the risk of skin cancer is important at any age.  When outside, we all need to apply liberal amounts of sunscreen with a SPF of 15 or higher, and as sunscreen wears off, we need to remember to reapply it.  Also wear protective clothing including a wide brim hat, long sleeves and sunglasses.

As our skin ages, it becomes thinner and has less fat, which is why we see bones and veins more easily and small injuries such as scratches, cuts and bumps take longer to heal.  It may be helpful to make a few adjustments as to how we treat it.  Some tips include regularly applying thick lotions on our bodies every day, drinking plenty of fluids (remember alcohol is a dehydrator), and reducing or stopping smoking.  Experts suggest you also try to avoid stress and to keep in mind that hot baths can result in even more dryness.

Accumulated years of sun damage cause dryness, wrinkles and age spots that can lead to skin cancer, and it is important to note any changes in your skin.  The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) describes the most common signs of skin cancer, which includes a new growth, a sore that doesn’t heal or a change in a mole.  An easy way to remember the signs of melanoma is to use the A-B-C-D-Es of melanoma:

·         “A” stands for asymmetrical. Does the mole or spot have an irregular shape with two parts that look very different?
·         “B” stands for border. Is the border irregular or jagged?
·         “C” is for color. Is the color uneven?
·         “D” is for diameter. Is the mole or spot larger than the size of a pea?
·         “E” is for evolving. Has the mole or spot changed during the past few weeks or months?

If you have any of these symptoms present, please call your doctor to schedule an examination.

This blog is for informative purposes only, please seek the advice of your
health care provider if you notice any changes in your skin

Annual Eye Exams Recommended After Age 60

Eye problems are a common complaint among the elderly.  The American Optometric Association advises that older adults need to be aware of the warning signs of age-related eye health problems as they can cause loss of vision.  Also since some eye diseases have no early symptoms, they recommend annual eye examinations for everyone over age 60.  It is important to remember that while many eye conditions are easily treated, diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure can lead to serious eye problems.

One almost universal vision change experienced by older adults is Presbyopia, which is the gradual, age-related loss of the eyes' ability to focus clearly on nearby objects.   Typically the condition is not treated with any intervention other than a pair of reading glasses.

Floaters are another problem seniors experience and appear as tiny specks or spots that seem to float across your field of vision.  The Mayo Clinic says that most eye floaters are caused by “age-related changes that occur as the jelly-like substance (vitreous) inside your eyes becomes more liquid. Microscopic fibers within the vitreous tend to clump and can cast tiny shadows on your retina, which appear to you as floaters.”  It is important to have the condition checked by an eye doctor as it can also be a sign of more serious eye problems including retinal detachment.

Dry eyes are also common in seniors and can cause itching, burning and even loss of vision.  Treatment includes nutritional supplements, medications to reduce inflammation, or eye drops that simulate real tears.  On the other side some older adults can have too many tears that may result from temperature changes or sensitivity to light.  Taking precautions such as wearing sunglasses can help but you should be checked by your doctor as it could signal an infection or blocked tear duct.

In addition cataracts and glaucoma are frequent problems affecting older adults.  In the case of cataracts, once they begin to affect your eyesight they can usually be removed by surgery.  Glaucoma is not curable but it is treatable, and without treatment, it can eventually lead to permanent blindness.
