MorningStar at Dayton Place Offers Memory Care

At MorningStar at Dayton Place, our Reflections Neighborhood is dedicated to the specialized care of individuals with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.  We take a holistic approach to our care, which starts with the utmost respect and compassion for each resident, borne out of a deep understanding of the many pathologies known collectively as dementia, including the most prevalent, Alzheimer’s disease.

Our secure and loving memory neighborhood can provide the care your family member needs at the onset of the disease through to the most advanced stages where the highest level of care is required.  The creative side of our care begins with learning about each resident.  We interview the family to get a thorough understanding of a person’s history and use that knowledge to aid in their care and to develop a trust between the resident and our staff.  To help control adverse behaviors associated with the disease, we use a variety of multi-sensory cues, including aromatherapy, to calm and to awaken memories, to support capabilities and to affirm the individual’s dignity and value.

MorningStar at Dayton Place’s memory care offers 24/7 care, a full-time licensed nurse, and three nutritious meals daily.  The Reflections Neighborhood is safe and secure environment with plenty of space for residents to move about freely, encouraging choice and independence as much as possible.  Our special residents also participant in a range of wellness programs, activities and special events.

Our Beaverton Team is Already Reaching Out to the Community

MorningStar of Beaverton is the area’s newest senior living community, and expects to open to residents in late 2018.  While we may not be up and running yet, we are reaching out to the community such as a recent workshop we hosted that is a part of our “Navigating the Journey of Dementia” series.  The March 16th workshop was entitled The Puzzle of Eating.

Families dealing with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia already know that for someone with memory impairment, mealtime can be a perplexing proposition.   For those with failing cognition, eating is not only a complex sequencing problem but socially stressful.

Our community’s philosophy and approach to providing all-encompassing support of those with dementia takes place under our signature program “Lavender Sky,” which includes making the dining experience easier for our most tender residents.  The workshop dealt with many of the common issues families and care professionals encounter while trying to encourage those with memory loss to eat.

The 3-hour workshop included topics such as: the aesthetics of dining; scratch cooking whenever possible; catering to personal preferences; and dignity through choice.  Furthermore, as many people with dementia experience a loss of appetite and weight loss, the discussion included the importance of serving nutritionally dense menus made from fresh ingredients and foods that promote brain health.  Another thing that was mentioned is serving meals family-style may help the person remember how good it felt eating or preparing food in their own home.

At MorningStar of Beaverton, team members will sit with our memory care residents to encourage appetites and enjoy one another’s companionship.  We will also regularly serve meals “family–style” as residents used to eat in their own home.  As many of those with memory loss have difficulty with utensils, meals include finger foods, texture-modified foods, and foods that taste as good as they look.  Please contact us to learn more about our community, which will include 66 graciously appointed suites for assisted living and 38 secure suites devoted to the individualized, specialized care of residents with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.

MorningStar of Beaverton is proud to provide the finest senior living with our unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve and we create a true home for residents in a serene setting.  Please contact us for more information of the newest senior living community in Beaverton, OR.

Senior Living is Ideal for Many

More and more older adults are discovering that senior living communities are the ideal place to enjoy their retirement years whether they are a senior who requires assistance or someone who is able to live independently.  This is probably due to the fact that over the last several years, senior living communities have changed dramatically.  Today’s modern communities are tailored to meet aging adults’ physical, emotional, spiritual and wellness needs and provide a comfortable and secure lifestyle.

Many seniors, especially those living alone, find themselves becoming more and more isolated as they have retired from careers and may even have stopped driving.  In contrast, senior living communities offer residents a friendly place to socialize and meet new friends as well as to engage in a variety of meaningful activities. Even for someone who values their privacy, senior communities offer the comfort of having other people around.  It is reassuring if you experience a fall or a medical emergency to know help is close at hand.

Also owning a home means a lot of physical upkeep such as mowing lawns, shoveling snow, and other routine chores which can be difficult for seniors.  The advantage to senior living communities is that someone else does the work while the residents have the freedom to concentrate on more fulfilling activities.

Another common problem with seniors who live alone is that many do not eat well.  Cooking may be difficult and/or they may not be able to easily get out to grocery shop.  Again the problem of good nutrition is solved in senior living communities as they provide healthy daily meals designed around the needs of the residents.

For older adults that have given up driving, senior living provides a safe solution.  Most provide scheduled outings to places such as shopping malls, outdoor parks, plays and other entertainment venues, museums and more.

MorningStar at Dayton Place offers residents a safe, comfortable place to age in place and to take advantage of resort-style amenities and meaningful activities.  We encourage you to schedule a tour to see for yourself why our residents are pleased to call MorningStar “home”.

MorningStar at Dayton Place represents the best in senior living with a unique mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  We have built our foundation on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve…all of which contributes to creating a true home for residents amid a beautiful, serene setting.  Call to learn more about our exceptional senior living community in Denver.

Assisted Living is Often the Answer for Seniors

Assisted Living is a new paradigm in wellness and engagement, and is built on a European social model.  It is designed for seniors who do not require 24-hour nursing care but rather just need a little assistance with daily living.  An assisted living community provides a secure and comfortable environment that lets you or your loved one age in place.  Furthermore, it gives family members peace of mind knowing that their elderly parent or relative is receiving the care they need.

Many communities offer a range of amenities that include private suites, libraries, theater, fitness centers as well as creative and wellness programs.  Some of the services typically provided by assisted living communities are daily meals, medication management, help with bathing and dressing and transportation.  With a home-like atmosphere, seniors have the opportunity for companionship and to develop new friendships and interests.

Assisted living can also provide a safer option for many seniors than living alone as help is much closer at hand.  According to the National Institute of Health, “More than one in three people age 65 years or older falls each year. The risk of falling -- and fall-related problems -- rises with age.”   In fact, over 1.6 million U.S. seniors go to emergency rooms for fall-related injuries every year.

At MorningStar Senior Living of Glendale, we think seniors are a national treasure and they deserve to be treated with the utmost dignity and respect.  Our beautiful community offers a choice of 71 well-appointed, private assisted living suites, including two-bedroom, one-bath floor plans. In addition, if you’re looking for independent living, we offer 38 Casitas as quadraplexes with attached garages. Within our Reflections Neighborhood, we devote 35 secure suites to the specialized care of residents with memory impairment.  Please give us a call so we can help you find your new home.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Glendale, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities.  Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve.  Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to see for yourself the finest senior living in Glendale AZ.

Seniors Need to Exercise Their Brain as Well as Their Body

As we age, engaging in memory exercises is just important as physically excising our bodies. The Alzheimer’s Association offers recommendations on some easy ways to daily exercise our brain with activities that include reading, writing and doing crossword or other puzzles, playing games and attending events such as lectures or plays.

They state that there are four areas we can work on to help reduce our risk of cognitive decline: physical health and exercise, diet and nutrition, cognitive activity, and social engagement.  In fact research has found that simply by keeping our brains active, we can actually increase its vitality and may even help to generate new brain cells.

An article on the “6 simple steps to keep your mind sharp at any age” from the Harvard Health Publication outlines ways to help prevent cognitive decline and reduce your risk of dementia.  The article stresses the importance of continuing to learn as challenging our brains with mental exercises is “believed to activate processes that help maintain individual brain cells and stimulate communication among them.”

MorningStar of Glendale could not agree more.  Once our community opens in late 2018, our calendar will be loaded with activities that are not only fun but also help to stimulate our brains.  Just a quick look at the monthly calendar of other MorningStar communities shows an abundance of activities such as word, board, and trivia games that help to challenge our brains.  Residents at MorningStar enjoy games such as Yahtzee, trivia, Jeopardy, Bingo, Scrabble, The Price is Right, or Uno.

Regardless of personal interest, our seniors will find plenty to do to keep them interested in life.  With a range of activities such as reading and knitting groups, arts and crafts, and fun-filled card games, residents stay social and keep their brains active.

Good Nutrition Helps Seniors Stay Healthy

Even for older adults, good nutrition is important for a healthy lifestyle.  A study from the National Institute of Health (NIH) states that “a good diet in your later years reduces your risk of osteoporosis, high blood pressure, heart diseases and certain cancers. As you age, you might need less energy. But you still need just as many of the nutrients in food.“

As a part of their findings, they recommend avoiding foods loaded with empty calories such as potato chips, cookies, soda and alcohol to ensure you get your proper amount of daily nutrients.  Instead they advise eating wholesome, nutrient-rich foods that are low in cholesterol and saturated or trans fats.

One of the benefits of eating well is that it may help to reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, Type II diabetes and bone loss as well as some types of cancer.  In fact if you already suffer from one of those diseases, maintaining a healthy diet along with staying physically active can help you to better manage them.  Additionally adopting a healthy diet can help to reduce your blood pressure and lower your cholesterol.

Wholesome, healthy foods help keep muscles, bones, organs, and other body parts strong and vitamin-rich food can boost immunity and fight against illness-causing toxins.  Furthermore, a healthy diet can help you feel better as well as give you more energy.

At MorningStar at Dayton Place, we wholeheartedly agree that good nutrition is important for seniors.  This is why our residents are served meals that are not only very healthy but also delicious.  Each of our meals are prepared by our Executive Chef and served in our beautiful dining room.  Please contact us to learn more about our wide range of services and programs offered by MorningStar.

Help Prevent Falls with Balance Exercises

We know that each year more than one-third of people age 65 or older suffer a fall and many of those incidents cause serious injuries or in some cases even death.  This is why preventing falls is extremely important for the elderly, and balance as well as strength excises can help to prevent falls.
The National Institute of Health (NIH) recommends 5 simple exercises that do not require any special equipment other than a chair (and someone to assist you if needed) that can improve balance and increase lower body strength. The series of exercises include the following:  standing on one foot; walking heel to toe; balance walk; back leg raises; and side leg raises.
These easy-to-do exercises can be done throughout the day and only take a few minutes to do each of them.  For further instructions on how they should be done, the NIH website offers a video on each exercise.  In addition the NIH recommends that seniors try to do three other types of exercises that focus on improving endurance, strength and flexibility.
At MorningStar of Arvada, we recognize the importance of exercising, and as such, will provide our residents with a full calendar of activities including well-designed exercise programs once we open in early 2018. With our large range of classes, there is something that is sure to please everyone.  Examples of what our monthly calendar may include: group exercises, moving and grooving, morning strength, balance and posture, flex and stretch, relaxation and chair exercises.  Other opportunities for exercising may include activities such as a walking group.
This post is intended for informational purposes only.  Before beginning any exercises, please consult with your health care provider.
The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Arvada, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities. Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve. Options at Senior Living Communities

The population of aging adults continues to grow and so does the demand for quality housing solutions and services.   To make it easier for people to find senior housing that best meets their needs, the following is an explanation of the terms you will come across while shopping for a new home for you or your loved one.

One popular senior living option is referred to as “independent living.” These are apartments or suites designed specifically for older adults who want the advantages associated with senior living communities, but do not require any assistance.   Residents benefit from the amenities, activities and companionship of community living.  While each community differs, services may include light housekeeping and laundry as well as on-site beauty shops and spas, exercise rooms and wellness classes.  Some communities also provide emergency response at night.

Another term used to describe senior living is “assisted living.”  This is housing that is geared toward those who need various levels of assistance with their daily activities.  Generally a resident’s needs are evaluated and agreed upon with the senior and their family.  Assisted living communities provide daily meals as well as around-the-clock care to ensure the safety and well-being of their residents.  Most facilities offer wellness programs, social activities, housekeeping services, 24-hour care, scheduled transportation and more.

Lastly another form of senior living is “memory care” that is devoted to the specialized care of individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  The best communities offer their residents comprehensive care that includes recreational and purposeful activities, scheduled outings and daily health monitoring.

We invite you to take a look at MorningStar Senior Living of Glendale.  We have a choice of independent living, assisted living and memory care options.  Our spacious, private suites are available in a variety of well-designed floor plans and have details reflective of those found throughout our beautifully appointed community.

MorningStar offers Assisted Living at Its Finest

When searching for senior living options, many people are not entirely sure what the term “assisted living” means.  We will try and clarify.  One of the first things to know is assisted living is not just another word for a nursing home.  Nor does it offer the same level of care and typically is not as expensive.

So what is assisted living?  Assisted living is designed for seniors who want to retain their independence but require some assistance with daily personal care activities.   While not all assisted living communities are the same in terms of the level of care, typically assisted living provides services for activities like bathing and dressing as well as prepared meals.

At assisted living communities such as Beaverton, OR’s new MorningStar of Beaverton, we create individualized care plans for each resident after talking with them and their family. Furthermore, during the course of your stay, your care plan will be regularly reviewed to ensure it addresses your needs.  Also regardless of the level of care, all residents receive the assurance of having 24/7 onsite Care Managers who help to ensure their safety and meet their every need.

As a resident of Beaverton, you will get three daily meals that are meticulously prepared largely from scratch by our Executive Chef.  Each meal is both nutritional and delicious and we modify recipes to address a number of different dietary restrictions including low sodium or low fat, sugar-free, no sugar, and vegetarian options.

In addition our assisted living residents will have the opportunity to participate in a range of activities and programs that are designed to promote physical, intellectual and spiritual wellness.   Please visit our website for contact information to learn more about MorningStar of Beaverton’s gorgeous new community.

Tips to Improve Your Health Regardless of Your Age

It is more important than ever to take care of your health as Americans are living longer and we all want to ensure a healthier old age.  However even if you are already a senior, health care professionals say it is never too late to start improving your health.

Sian Robinson, a professor of nutritional epidemiology at the University of Southampton, recently authored a study on senior nutrition and states that, "Improving the quality of your diet can have a beneficial effect on health, whatever your age."  One recommendation is to eat more foods containing fiber.  Doctors report the addition of more fiber can positively impact your overall health by helping:  your colon work better and avoid constipation; reduce the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and colon cancer; and lower your blood cholesterol level.

Another change that can improve your overall health as well as help to make you feel better and increase your level of energy is to add physical activity to your daily life.  This also can strengthen your bones and muscles, which in turn can help to prevent falls.  If you do fall, stronger bones are less likely to break.  Physical active has additionally been found to help your brain as studies show people who exercise regularly make better decisions.

It is also beneficial for seniors to keep their minds active. Like our muscles, our brains need to be exercised regularly to improve memory loss and cognitive skills.  Activities such as targeted brain exercises and playing word and trivia games can help.  Other habits that can enhance your health include not smoking, having regular checkups and learning how to prevent falls.

At MorningStar of Beaverton, the area’s newest assisted living and memory care community, we provide seniors with a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.   Along with beautiful private suites, we also offer residents resort-style amenities and services as well as a range of activities, wellness programs and nutritional, tasty meals.  Visit our website to learn more.

Our post is for information purposes and we advise you to consult your health care provider with any medical problems or questions
