MorningStar of Beaverton Offers Support to Families & Residents Alike

MorningStar of Beaverton understands you may feel guilty about moving your spouse or parent into assisted living.  If you are the adult child of the senior, you may worry you have let them down by not having them move in with you even though you know your other commitments make it impractical.  Or you may already be the caregiver and realize the job is becoming too big to continue caring for your loved one properly at home.

If any of this sounds familiar, you need to know you are not alone.  At MorningStar of Beaverton, we understand the mixed-emotions that come with such a big lifestyle change.   However just as we are committed to caring for our residents, the MorningStar staff is there for the families of our residents.

When your parent makes their home with us, we are not replacing you in their life, but rather providing the specialized care they need.  In fact, we think by letting us handle all of the caregiver duties, it frees you up to enjoy the time you do spend with your loved one, to relax together and share memories or a laugh.

Our experience has taught us it is best to introduce the idea of assisted living to your parent or spouse during a time and place when everyone is gathered and feeling calm.  Remember a decision does not have to be made all at once but typically it is better to let it come in stages.  Sometimes a family worries they may get resistance to the idea but are surprised to find it is something the person has been thinking about for some time.

Ultimately the decision should be a consensus among family members as well as the senior.  If you have questions or want to talk to someone about it, the MorningStar staff is here for you.  Please visit our website and consider setting up a tour to see our new community.

MorningStar of Beaverton proudly provides the very best in senior living with our unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we create a true home for residents amid a beautiful setting.  Please schedule a tour to discover our new assisted living and memory care community.

With all the Benefits Offered, Many Seniors Prefer Senior Living

Most seniors say that they actually prefer living in a senior community to that of living alone.  In fact, there are many reasons why senior living communities such as MorningStar of Beaverton have become such a popular option among aging adults.  One reason no doubt is that they specialize in providing seniors with a lifestyle designed around comfort, wellness, and community.

As senior age many feel good about relinquishing tasks such as yardwork and home maintenance.  Many no longer feel comfortable driving and may have given it up altogether.  This may mean it is not as easy for many older folks to get out and about as in the past and makes grocery shopping and meal preparation more difficult.  These problems are no longer an issue when you or a loved one moves into MorningStar of Beaverton’s assisted living community.

Older adults also report senior living communities make them feel safer and they no longer worry about home intrusions.  They also get peace of mind knowing that 24/7 help is just a push of a button away with their emergency call system if the need arises.  As A Place for Mom explains, “while many seniors living alone are fine, there are vast numbers of seniors living alone in unsafe or unhealthy situations who would benefit immensely from life in a senior community.”

Another big problem with seniors living alone is they often do not eat well.  Again, at senior living communities such as MorningStar of Beaverton, our residents are served food that is both healthy and tasty.  Not only that but as meals are served restaurant-style in our attractive dining room, mealtime is not only about food but allows us to share the companionship of breaking bread together.

Furthermore, senior living provides ready-made companionship and helps to alleviate feelings of loneliness and boredom.  At MorningStar, we offer a range of activities designed to keep seniors engaged physically, mentally, spiritually and socially.  If you are looking for the best senior living Beaverton Oregon has to offer, we encourage you to visit our website to learn why our residents are proud to call MorningStar of Beaverton “home.”

The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Beaverton, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities.  With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we create a true home for residents amid a beautiful setting. Schedule a Tour to See Our Beautiful Senior Living Community

We opened our doors to residents in January committed to provide the best assisted and independent living Peoria AZ has to offer.  Our website has a lot of information about MorningStar at Golden Ridge’s new senior living community, but to really get an ideal of what we are all about, we encourage you to schedule a tour.  Located on our home page is a link to “Schedule a Tour” that takes just a few minutes to fill out.

An onsite tour is important for many reasons and gives you the chance to experience it with your own eyes, ears, and instincts.  Remember this may be the place where you or your loved decide to make their new home.  A tour also allows you to evaluate the community for cleanliness and to get an idea of the daily routine of the residents.  Additionally you will get to meet the staff and talk to residents.

Some of the questions you will want to ask include information regarding staff members’ credentials and have they gone through background checks or received any special training.   Does the staff seem friendly and do residents appear to be well cared for and happy?  If you can, eat a meal at the community as it gives you an idea of the quality of food as well as time to visit with staff and residents.

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, we recommend that you plan on spending at least 45 minutes with us during your tour.  You are welcome to join us for lunch (please let us know when you set up the tour) and if you do, please allow approximately 90 minutes so you can enjoy your meal.  We will tailor your visit to your priorities and let us know if you have any special concerns.  Once you complete our online form, we will get back to you ASAP to set up a convenient time to come and visit our beautiful community.

At MorningStar of Golden Ridge, we are proud to offer the very best in senior living with a unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve in order to create a true home for residents in a beautiful, serene setting. The Spring Gardening Season is Around the Corner

Research has shown gardening to be an effective low-impact exercise for seniors.  Along with providing a moderate amount of aerobic exercise for aging adults, gardening can offer benefits to your mental and emotional health.  To keep it accessible to the elderly for whom lifting and bending can be difficult; it is smart to incorporate a few modifications such as raised garden beds as well as using various ergonomic tools.

One of the best things about gardening is it stimulates all of the senses and offers an excellent excuse to get outside and soak up some vitamin D as well as boost serotonin levels in your brain. Serotonin is a chemical that improves your mood and helps you to feel calm and centered.  In addition to relieving stress and anxiety, gardening gives seniors a sense of purpose and accomplishment with its beautiful or edible finished product.  It also is an enjoyable way to use of all of your motor skills and improve endurance and strength.

Working in a garden has also proven helpful to those with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.  Gardening can help recall pleasant memories from the past and remind a person of healthier times.  Experts advise not to give someone with dementia a sharp tool.

If seniors plan to get out and garden, they need to protect themselves against pests and the elements.  It is recommended that seniors avoid the heat of the day and apply plenty of sunblock and wear protective clothing including sunglasses and a hat.  They should have shady areas available with benches or chairs so they may easily take a break as needed.  It is also important to remember to drink plenty of fluids as dehydration can be a problem.

Among our many services and amenities at MorningStar of Beaverton, we offer residents the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors through two enclosed courtyards, strolling paths and raised garden beds that make it easier for seniors to work in.  Please visit our website to learn more about the finest senior living in the area.

MorningStar of Beaverton is pleased to provide the area the very best in senior living with our unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve and we strive to create a true home for residents in a beautiful setting. Exercise Can Help Seniors Improve Their Balance

It is important for older adults to take precautions to prevent falls as the resulting injuries tend to be more serious such as a broken hip or head trauma.  However doctors also point out that being sedentary is bad for our health regardless of how old we are and it is important to keep moving.

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) reports that one out of every four Americans aged 65 and older falls every year but say there are things that seniors can do to help prevent a fall.  The trick is to find a way to safely move about while taking into account any balance issues you may experience.

As many adults are less active as they get older, it can exacerbate the physical effects of aging. Experts say, “Failure to engage in even mild exercise on a regular basis results in reduced muscle strength, decreased bone mass, loss of balance and coordination, and reduced flexibility.”  Other issues that can lead to falls include poor eyesight and taking medications with side-effects such as drowsiness, dizziness and low blood pressure.  Chronic health conditions including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and arthritis as well as problems with numbness in the feet can also increase the risk of falls.

The good news is there are a variety of easy-to-do exercises that can help seniors improve their balance. Even if you rely on a cane or other assistive devices, balance exercises can improve your mobility.  While many independent and assisted living communities such as MorningStar at Golden Ridge offer a variety of exercise options, there are also some that can be done throughout the day right at home.  One example is to try standing on one foot while close to the kitchen counter.  If you need, keep your hand on the counter for support and as you feel more confident try taking your hand off.   Another thing you can do is to try and get up from a chair without using your arms.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge’s distinct mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options.  Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve.  Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to see for yourself the area’s finest independent and assisted living.

Memory Care at the Newly Opened MorningStar of Beaverton

In case you haven’t heard, MorningStar has opened a new community in Beaverton, Oregon which has two Reflections Neighborhoods specifically designed to care for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. While MorningStar may be new to Beaverton, our team is highly experienced in serving seniors, understanding how to provide residents with a quality of life other memory care communities simply cannot match.

In the Reflections Neighborhoods we are set up to care for those from the early onset of the disease right through to the most advanced stages.  Our team has been specially trained in our unique, holistic approach to memory care that begins by treating each resident with the utmost respect and compassion. Each day finds our memory care residents participating in a variety of purposeful and recreational activities, including special events and scheduled outings.

We bring a deep understanding of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia to our care and recognize that the essence of the person still exists – our job is to find ways to connect with that essence regardless of the level of memory loss.  Before a person moves in, we meet with them and their family to learn everything we can about the person’s history including their vocation, talents and interests.  This information helps us to develop a trust with the person and create an individualized care plan.  Our team uses a variety of techniques to calm and awaken memories, support capabilities and affirm the person’s dignity and value including aromatherapy, music and art.

Along with memory care, MorningStar of Beaverton has 66 assisted living suites for those who require various levels of support with the activities of daily living.  Please visit our website to learn more.

The Transition to an Assisted Living Community

MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care of Beaverton is dedicated to providing the best senior living Beaverton has to offer.  But we recognize for many seniors change can be both difficult and challenging.  While moving to an assisted living community may be the best decision for the person and their family, this doesn’t mean there won’t be a transition period.

Many seniors mistakenly think touring assisted living communities, deciding on one, figuring out budget considerations, and perhaps selling the family home is the most difficult part of moving to community living.  However, experts report it can typically take anywhere between 30 to 90 days before a senior feels comfortable in their new home, but there are a few things that can be done to help the process go more smoothly.

To start with it is important to make sure your new home is filled with familiar and beloved objects such as personal photos, books, and knick-knacks.  As the new resident, you should try to keep a positive attitude toward the move and be a good sport about joining community activities and socializing with others.  After all making new friends can make all the difference in the world.  Furthermore, remember the staff is there to help and will be more than glad to answer all of your questions.

As a family member, be open to listening to your loved one’s fears and concerns.  While you will want to visit, be sure not to be “too supportive” as the senior needs to find their own way in their new home.  Experts say it is also important to not waste time feeling guilty about moving your loved one into assisted living.  Remember it is a safe place for them to find comfort, wellness and community.  Please visit MorningStar of Beaverton to learn more about the area’s finest assisted living and memory care.
