Find Answers on MorningStar’s FAQs Page

MorningStar at Golden Ridge’s website is loaded with resources and information for families in the Peoria, AZ area looking for senior living options.  While we are more than happy to personally answer any questions you may have, we have found it is helpful to provide information on commonly asked questions under our “FAQ” tool bar.

Here you will get a good start on questions such as “Is there an age requirement for becoming a resident of MorningStar?”  We explain that in our Cottages (Casitas at Golden Ridge) one member of a couple must be at least 55 years old and able to live independently, and in our Independent Living, Assisted Living and Memory Care suites, you must be at least 62 years old.

Another commonly asked question is “What is an assisted living community?” We explain our assisted living is for seniors who require assistance with the Activities of Daily Living (ADLs).  Within a residential setting, we offer families peace of mind knowing trained and compassionate care managers are there to help navigate their loved ones’ changing health conditions.  Like many senior living communities, we also offer a secure neighborhood for the memory-impaired (those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia).

Couples will learn that of course, they can move in together, and that we also offer Companion Living, which is where two people of the same sex can share a suite.  In addition, we offer respite stays or trial (short-term) stays based on the availability of a fully-furnished suite.

If you are wondering how your monthly fee is determined, our FAQs explains room rates are based on the type of room, location and view as well as the level of services for assisted living residents.  This is determined after an assessment by our Wellness Director.   You will additionally find information regarding our transportation services, ratio of care staff to residents, and answers to many other questions.

Once you take a look at our website (be sure to look through our gallery of pictures), please consider setting up a tour.  It is impossible to truly assess our loving atmosphere and beautiful, vibrant campus without a personal visit.  We look forward to meeting you.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar at Golden Ridge, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities.  Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve.  Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to see for yourself the finest senior living in Peoria, AZ.

Want to Make a Difference in the Lives of Our Cherished Residents?

ms joint 8
American essayist, lecturer, and philosopher, Ralph Waldo Emerson is quoted as saying, “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, and to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”  At the Phoenix area’s MorningStar at Arcadia, MorningStar of Fountain Hills, MorningStar at Arrowhead, and the new MorningStar at Golden Ridge, we could not agree more. We feel privileged to serve seniors, in fact it is MorningStar’s chosen calling, and understand it is an honor to be able to make a difference in their lives.  Currently we seek others with a felt calling to serve to fill a variety of assisted living jobs.

We know if anyone deserves to be honored and respected, it is seniors who we consider to be true heroes.  We are also proud that our beautiful senior living communities have earned the respect and gratitude of area families for the compassionate, professional care provided to their loved ones.  In fact check out our website to read reviews from residents themselves or family members who enthusiastically praise the great care and treatment provided by our homes.

This would not be possible without our compassionate team of service professionals who routinely go the extra mile to not only meet expressed needs but our residents’ unexpressed ones.  They are the type of people who do the right thing even when no one is watching, and who feel privileged to make a difference in the lives of our cherished residents.

From MorningStar care managers, housekeepers, Executive Directors or chefs, we know all of our communities’ roles are vital to the smooth operation of our homes.  While some of our various assisted living jobs may have specific educational and experience requirements, most importantly we look for virtues such as kindness and character as we know these are just as important as education and experience.  Please visit our website to learn more about the various posted positions at our four senior living communities in the Phoenix area.

At MorningStar’s Arcadia, Arrowhead, Fountain Hills & Golden Ridge communities, our unique mission statement: “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities.  Our foundation is built on honoring God and valuing all seniors, and we are currently recruiting staff with a felt calling to serve. What is Assisted Living?

The American Healthcare Association defines assisted living as “part of a continuum of long-term care services that provides a combination of housing, personal care services, and health care designed to respond to individuals who need assistance with normal daily activities in a way that promotes maximum independence.”  So rather than taking away the independence of seniors assisted living actually helps residents to maintain their independence while giving them the care they need to live comfortably and safely.

Also please remember assisted living is not a nursing home.  It is a community designed to meets the needs and preferences of the residents and to give them their dignity, autonomy, privacy, independence, choice and safety.  While each community has its own personality, assisted living typically addresses the needs of its residents with 24-hour care services, daily meals and wellness activities.   In fact, it is often more cost effective not to mention more convenient than employing a group of home health care providers.

At MorningStar of Beaverton, we feel honored to serve seniors, and as such, our entire staff strives to provide our residents with a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.  Once you decide to join our MorningStar family, our Wellness Director will sit down with you and your family to set up a care plan that addresses your every need.  For our residents’ families, they get peace of mind knowing our around-the-clock Care Managers are available to ensure the comfort and safety of their loved one.

Our community opened last November and is conveniently located in a western suburb of Portland.  We offer 66 private assisted living suites, which are available in an array of configurations including spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans.  Please visit our website and use our online form to schedule a tour or for pricing and availability information.

MorningStar of Beaverton proudly provides the very best in senior living with our unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we create a true home for residents amid a beautiful setting.  Please contact us to learn more about our exceptional assisted living and memory care community.

Hobbies are Both Fun and Healthy

Spending time doing things you enjoy can not only help you to stay more interested in life but may also be good for your health.  Many hobbies are enjoyed at any age and can help to exercise your mind or body (many do both) as well as provide social interactions.

Creative hobbies such as painting, sculpting, photography, scrapbooking and knitting or the performing arts are fun activities for seniors and provide lots of opportunity for socializing.  Another healthy hobby is caring for a pet according to A Place for Mom.  They explain that, “Pets provide a comfort system and actually produce a chemical chain reaction in the brain that helps to lower levels of the stress-inducing hormone cortisol and increase the production of the feel-good hormone serotonin.”  Studies have shown that pet ownership may help lower cholesterol, fight depression and help protect against heart conditions.

Stretching exercises and yoga are also popular with seniors as they help improve flexibility and movement and build balance as well as improve blood flow to the brain, heart and circulatory system. Yoga classes are designed for many physical fitness levels such as chair yoga for those unable to get down on the floor.  Joining a walking group is another fun way to exercise and spend time with friendly faces.

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, we specialize in providing our senior living residents with a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.  Every day we offer a variety of fun and engaging activities that may include things such as exercise and walking groups, craft classes, games, scrapbooking, and poetry and short stories readings.  Please visit our website to learn more about our loving community and while you are there, be sure to take a look at our Community Amenities and Suite Features & Floor Plan pages.

When you tour Golden Ridge, we know from the moment you walk through our door, you are sure to be impressed. Our community was designed from the ground up to accommodate our residents’ every need and is beautifully decorated throughout to provide an atmosphere of comfort, relaxation and serenity.  In addition our stylish suites reflect the rest of the community.

A Place for Mom has a few tips for you when visiting a senior living community.  Look around at the layout (too large or too small?) and tone of the community.  Observe a community activity to get an idea if residents are enjoying themselves. Also they suggest you pay attention to the staff’s friendliness.  In addition, ask to see the outdoor space.  If you can they recommend eating a meal as you will not only get a chance to sample the cuisine but will get to see residents in a relaxing setting.  Be sure to ask questions about personal care, safety and security, housekeeping and laundry services, and move-in and move-out criteria.  Above all, A Place for Mom advises that you trust your instincts.

For your tour, MorningStar at Golden Ridge asks that you allow at least 45 minutes in order for us to show off our community.  If you would like to join us for lunch (just let us know when you are setting up your tour), please expect to be with us for at least 90 minutes to allow for a leisurely meal.   Visit our website and use our quick link to set up a personalized tour of our lovely community or give us a call.

Companion Living at MorningStar of Arvada

ms joint 7

In addition to MorningStar of Arvada offering seniors a choice of smartly-designed spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans, we also allow residents to share living arrangements.  Our Companion Living program is specifically designed for unrelated seniors of the same sex to share a suite.  This arrangement is available to our independent living, assisted living and memory care residents.

What are the benefits?  Actually there are many reasons it may make good sense for you or a family member that is considering senior living. Since we understand that people are designed for relationships, most of us flourish when we are in one.  However, the fact is that many seniors have lost their long-term life partner and are left feeling bereft and isolated. So besides offering the economic benefit of splitting the monthly rent expense in half, a roommate can help alleviate many of these feelings.

In addition to providing a companion, a roommate can make the transition period for a new in-coming resident much easier.  The seasoned community member can help guide their new companion through all the facets of senior living and make them feel more confident in socializing with the entire community.  Also another often overlooked advantage to companion living is that since roommates inherently look out after one another, they may be the first one to notice a change in the health of their roomie.

To ensure the arrangement works for both parties, MorningStar of Arvada goes to great lengths to match residents who wish to participate in companion living and pair residents based on similar backgrounds and shared interests.  Furthermore, even when you share the rent with another resident, you are still offered the full scope of MorningStar’s resort-style amenities including daily meals, activities, scheduled transportation, entertainment and much more.   Please contact us if you think this is something you would be interested in.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Arvada, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities. Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve. Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to learn more about the finest independent living, assisted living and memory care Arvada CO has to offer.

Age Related Hearing Loss

According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Commucation Disorders (NIDCD) about one in three people between the ages of 65 and 74 has hearing loss, and nearly half of those 75 and older have difficultly hearing.  This can make it hard for seniors to understand and follow a doctor's advice, to respond to warnings, and to hear doorbells and alarms.  Difficultly hearing also makes it hard for many elderly people to follow and engage in conversation with their family and friends.

Known as presbycusis, hearing loss in seniors generally occurs gradually and initially affects the ability to hear higher pitched sounds.  The person may notice that while the speech is loud enough, it sounds as if the talker is mumbling.  The condition is commonly caused by the loss of nerve hair cells in the Cochlea or the deterioration of other parts of the inner ear or auditory nerves.   Age-related hearing loss typically affects both ears equally.
In some cases, health conditions more common among the elderly such as high blood pressure and diabetes can additionally affect hearing.  Furthermore, certain medications including some types of chemotherapy drugs can cause hearing loss.

The NIDCD has a checklist to help seniors determine if they are experiencing hearing problems.  Questions include: Do you feel frustrated when talking to members of your family because you have difficulty hearing them?; Do you have difficulty hearing when someone speaks in a whisper?; and Do you that any difficulty with your hearing limits your personal or social life?

Another cause of hearing loss can be the result of long-term exposure to loud noise and is one of the most common occupational hazards.  The exposure damages the sensory hair cells in the ears, which do not grow back.  It is estimated that at least 10 million Americans have irreversible hearing loss due to long-term exposure to noise.

Seniors should discuss any hearing problems with their health care provider who will refer them to an otolaryngologist who specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the ear, nose, throat, and neck.  The otolarynogogist will test your hearing, and if a problem is found, will refer you on to an audiologist who will determine the type and degree of hearing loss.   Either they or a hearing aid specialist will fit you for a hearing aid.

This post is intended for informational purposes only.  Please contact your health care provider with any questions or concerns you have regarding your health.

Please schedule a tour to discover our new assisted living and memory care community.

Financial and Care Planning for Seniors

Especially if you are an older adult, you should have a will or trust drawn up as well as a power-of-attorney and an advanced directive.   The difference between a will and a trust is a will is a legal document that goes into effect after the person dies while a trust goes into effect as soon as it is created.  The trustor (the creator of that trust) can name others to be in charge of the trust when she or he becomes incapacitated or dies.

A living will, also known as a Health Care Directive, is a legal document in which a person specifies what actions should be taken for their health care if they are no longer able to make decisions for themselves because of illness or incapacity.  The person named as the health care authority has the power to make medical decisions and sees to it that the wishes of the person is carried out.

Another legal document many seniors find is a good idea to have is a Durable Power Of Attorney (DPOA).  The document is used if the person (the principal) ever becomes mentally incapacitated and covers both financial and medical decisions.   The attorney-in-fact or agent in effect becomes a legal guardian for the disabled principal.

These types of documents should be drawn up before a person becomes incapacitated.  If someone has a diminished capacity due to Alzheimer’s or another medical condition and needs someone to handle their medical and financial decisions, a person can pursue a legal Guardianship status for them.  Legal guardianship is granted by the courts and typically continues throughout the remainder of the person’s life.  Please refer to your financial consultant or attorney for more information.

Many Seniors Prefer Community Living

Did you know that studies show many older adults prefer the carefree life offered by senior living?  The idea of no longer having all of the responsibilities that come along with owning a home including the repairs and upkeep is very appealing to many seniors.  Furthermore, for seniors who still think moving into an assisted living community is a place people go to die, most likely have not visited one of today’s vibrant communities.

There are even studies that suggest moving into senior living may be a healthier option for some than living alone.  This can especially be true for seniors after the death of a spouse as many begin to feel isolated and lonely.  Not to mention the burden of keeping up with household chores such as cleaning, cooking, laundry or needing to move up and down stairs.

Senior living communities offer an individual the opportunity to easily make new friends as well as gives them the time to pursue special interests or to explore new hobbies.  Also communities typically provide amenities such as onsite fitness centers in addition to offering a range of exercise classes geared toward the fitness level of older adults.

MorningStar of Beaverton is a new assisted living and memory care community that that opened late last year.  We understand that for some the “MorningStar” name may be new to the Portland area, but we want to reassure you that MorningStar Senior Living is anything but new.  Our senior living communities are scattered throughout the Western U.S. and include MorningStar of Happy Valley, which is set to open in late 2019.

In addition, we want you know that our community is staffed by a compassionate, professional team of individuals who are experienced in all facets of senior living and committed to providing our residents a true “home.”  Visit our website for contact information and to find out more about our beautiful community.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Beaverton, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities. Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve. Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to see for yourself the finest senior living in Beaverton Oregon.
